What to do if Your Microsoft Account Gets Hacked

If your Microsoft account gets hacked, it can be a daunting and overwhelming experience. A compromised Microsoft account not only puts your personal information at risk but can also lead to unauthorized access to your other online accounts. Therefore, it’s crucial to act fast and take the necessary steps to regain control of your account and prevent any further damage.
What to do if Your Microsoft Account Gets Hacked.
Here are the best steps you can take when you think your Microsoft account has been hacked.
1. Try and log in to Your Account
If you believe your Microsoft account has been hacked into, the first thing you should do is try and log in to your account.
Go to www.Microsoft.com. Do not login from any links you may have received through email or SMS.
See if you can log in using your password. You may be able to before the hacker locks you out.
2. After Step 1, Change Your Password
If after attempting step 1 and you actually manage to log in to your account, you must change your password immediately.
One of the reasons your account may have been hacked is because the hacker knows your password, so if you have access to your account, you must change the password as soon as possible, to make sure the hacker is unable to cause any damage.
3. Revert Any Changes
If you still have access to your account, check for any strange activity that may have occurred.
Some things to check are the payment methods and Contact details. Hackers may change some of these details in order to verify their use on the account.
If you notice anything that has changed to the account, be sure to delete or change it so the account is back to it’s usual state.
4. Contact Microsoft Support (Do Not Skip This)
This is the most important step. Whether you’ve managed to log in to your account or you’ve been locked out by the hacker, you must contact Microsoft support.
There may be things the hacker has changed which you aren’t aware off, and Microsoft support will be able to see all changes made.
Also, if you are unable to gain access to your account, they will also help you with that.
5. Watch Your Account Activity and Bank Statements
Even if you think everything has been resolved, there still might be something the hackers have done.
Watch your bank statements for any unusual charges. You should also be extra cautious about your account and if anything unusual is still happening, repeat the steps above.
6. Change Passwords for Other Accounts
This step really only applies for when you use the same passwords for multiple accounts.
If hacker’s have managed to get the password for your Microsoft account, they’ll go and try that on other accounts you may have (e.g. Netflix or PayPal).
If you are using the same password on multiple accounts, you must change them to make sure they’re all different. This will decrease the risk of you other accounts being hacked.
