The Most Dangerous Cyber Security Attacks in 2023

68% of surveyed business leaders feel like Cyber Security risks are getting worse (According to Accenture). They have good reason to believe this, as attacks continue to get more sophisticated.

The new year has begun, so let’s take a look at the most dangerous cyber attack threats of 2023.

To protect your business throughout the year, it’s important to watch the cyber attack trends such as what methods hackers are using? And what types of attacks are increasing in volume?

Here are the cyber attack threats you should watch out for in 2023.

Cyber Attacks on 5G Devices

5G has been a talking point around the world for a few years now, and it’s finally beginning to fulfil the promise of lightning-fast internet speeds.

Hackers are looking to take advantage of the 5G hardware used for routers, mobile devices and computers. Anytime you have new technology like this, it’s likely to have some vulnerabilities, and this is exactly what hackers are looking to exploit.

How can you prepare for cyber attacks on 5G devices? Well, it’s all about the devices you buy. Some manufactures build their devices with better firmware security, so make sure you look into this when purchasing a new device.

One-Time Password (OTP) Bypass

It can be quite alarming when a new cyber security trend can get past one of the best forms of account security.

Multi-factor authentication is well-known as a very effective security method and hopefully everyone reading this has enabled it on as many of their accounts as possible.

But how are hackers bypassing this layer of security when it’s so effective? Here are a few different ways they do it:

Reusing a token: Gaining access to a recent user OTP and trying to reuse it.

Sharing unused tokens: The hacker uses their own account to get an OTP, then attempts that code on a different account.

Leaked token: Using an OTP token leaked through a web application

Password reset function: A hacker uses phishing to fool the user into resetting a password. This method is also similar to Push Notification Spamming.

If you want to learn more about how MFA notification spamming can catch you out, we have a quick video showing how it is done, or check out the article below.

Cyber Attacks Surrounding World Events

During the pandemic, you’ll probably remember times where you received text messages about the Covid-19 Vaccines.

As many of these messages were legitimate, cyber criminals decided to use this to their advantage, trying to trick people with fake vaccine appointments in order to obtain peoples’ personal information.

These scams are something we need to look out for during 2023. They may not be Covid-19 related, but about other world events that may occur during the year.

Smishing and Mobile Device Attacks

As mentioned in the previous cyber attack threat, Smishing is an attack that you’ll most likely come across this year.

SMS Phishing has actually been a threat for a long time and the only way you can avoid it is to be educated about this scam.

Smishing (SMS Phishing) is when a hacker sends out fake text messages to unsuspecting people, with the target of making them click a fake link and input their personal information or even payment/bank details.

Elevated Email Phishing using AI Technology

Email Phishing is another type of scam you have probably come across before, however with new technology being developed as we go into 2023, these phishing attacks will be much more effective.

With AI technology being developed, hackers will use this to their advantage and get help writing up fake emails to catch people out with.

With the high intelligence AI may hold, it’s possible that the phishing emails being produced will be more realistic than ever.

if you’re a bit of a beginner when it comes to identifying Phishing scams, we highly recommend you check out this article:
